Has your light dimmed or are you shining brightly?
What makes a light shine brighter?
What dims a light down?
We’ve all seen a child light up upon seeing something for the first time. Their eyes light up, a smile starts to appear, their voice raises, and their body even gets excited moving faster, skipping, jumping almost as if they can’t contain their joy.
As adults it may look like a big exhale as we let go of the weight of life while we fall into our favorite chair- content, relaxed, and in our happy place or on vacation.
My own light had dimmed.
I was on the hamster wheel of life just moving through each day to the next.
I was disconnected, angry, sad, disappointed, and I even felt trapped.
Helpless, alone, lost, and even unable to sleep well.
I can clearly see looking back that my light was barely there.
Is this how I want to continue living for the next 20 years?
Can I live another 20 years like this?
How many years had I been living in this place-this dark place?
I don’t have the exact date, but I know it had been more than 8 years when I finally did something.
As I truly started to contemplate, is this how I want to live the next 20 years of my life… my light started to grow a little brighter.
For so long I sat, waited, practiced patience for the situation to change but finally it was the moment I took a step in a new direction that started igniting the fire inside of me.
What are some of the first steps?
· Asking yourself questions
· No longer accepting life or the situation as it is.
· Searching or looking for something that can help.
· Listening to yourself and your body.
· Changing something, anything
I started by answering the question…
No, I cannot live like this for another 20 years.
I told myself I will not celebrate another birthday living life like this.
I started reading books and going to therapy. I moved and started asking myself what do I want my life to look like? Some days I call it an awakening, some days I call it a mid-life unraveling but I got very uncomfortable.
They say insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. Well, I changed everything except my family and my job, I needed to uncover as much as I could to bare bones and rebuild on a stronger foundation.
My light needed to be found, cleaned off and serviced/repaired. Today it shines brightly, and life feels magical.
What is your light looking for?
What small change will you make to adjust its brightness?
